Sense of Place

Rooted in the bounty of California agriculture and technology, Montage Healdsburg harnesses powerful healing properties.

Montage Healdsburg (montage.com) inspires guests to look both inside and out. Rolling, vineyard-covered hills and groves of twisting live oak trees in Sonoma County, California, informed the use of natural materials like stone and copper within 130 bungalow-style guest rooms and suites. Architecturally, the accommodations resemble stilted tree houses, strategically positioned up high with views among the treetops. Floor-to-ceiling windows further dissolve the indoor boundary, opening onto patios furnished with dining tables, fire pits, and plush seating.

Paved pathways—navigable on foot or by golf cart—wind around the resort’s working vineyard, where winemaker Jesse Katz crafts a renowned Surveyor cabernet. Wellness-focused programming happens among and adjacent to the vines: guided meditations, sound baths, and Yoga Among the Vines classes, each activity blending relaxation with nature. “These experiences are often timed to highlight seasonal changes and the lifecycle of the grapevines,” says Jennifer Holzworth, who oversees spa operations for Montage Hotels & Resorts.

From both of the property’s pools—a zero-edge adult pool and a family pool—guests enjoy panoramic vineyard views and parasol-shaded loungers ripe for a catnap. Book through Compass Sports for a more active afternoon, taking a cycling tour through Dry Creek Valley, a scenic hike, or an on-site archery session. Signature restaurant Hazel Hill favors farm-to-table ingredients, and Scouts Field Bar is more casual but doesn’t lower the bar with regard to cuisine. At the heart of it all, find Spa Montage, an 11,500-square-foot sanctuary inspired by both wine country and the timeless pursuit of antiaging remedies.

A standout among treatments is the Hydra Spa Ultimate Facial, which uses microcurrent, radio-frequency, and ultrasonic vibrations, as well as vortex cleansing and hydration infusion with Irene Forte Skincare products for instantly more radiant skin. In early 2025, Montage introduced an exclusive partnership with Skin Design London (SDL), created by celebrity esthetician Fatma Shaheen. The Healdsburg team was trained by Shaheen herself to deliver two exclusive treatments, including the 90-minute Face Tight Facial that combines vitamin skin peels, oxygen therapy, and a microcurrent facelift.

Montage Spa’s connection to the land is most palpable through its seasonal offerings. “While calm-inducing lavender, grown throughout the property, is infused into select treatments year-round, harvest season is August through November,” says Holzworth. “During the fall we work with our winemaker to source leftover grape skins and seeds from the on-site vineyards. Then we press them into a finely ground puree rich in antioxidants, polyphenols, and vitamins C, E, and B that we incorporate into body scrub and facial treatments.” The blend protects skin from environmental stress, boosts collagen production, and promotes a healthy glow, going beyond what’s available on the commercial skincare market and embracing the natural rhythms of wine country.
